What part of advertising is bad?

Being around artists all time, I get a lot of flack for being an advertising major. Artists, especially musicians, have this view of advertising as being a device to push the evil capitalist agenda and manipulate average people into buying things they don’t need. Even though sometimes this form of thinking is right on the money, sometimes it isn’t, and it is those times that inspire people to go in to the industry. So far I have not met anyone in the advertising business that went into it thinking “I don’t want to be creative and make things people will enjoy, I would rather annoy and trick people.”

The creative part of advertising is what I love. Yeah there are some crap advertisements out there, but that just shows how hard it is to make things like deodorant seem interesting. Like anything there are people who are good at it and people who aren’t. The people who are good at it make the ads that you may not even recognize as an advertisement, or maybe you do but it is so funny, heartfelt, moving, epic, or genius, that you cant help but enjoy it. That’s what I’m in it for; the rare stuff like Heineken and Mini – the stuff that makes all those crapvertisements like Zales and State Farm almost worth it.
