Band Branding

I am in a band. The band’s name is Ata Ghost, but don’t bother asking what our genre is, because we don’t really know. Our “sound” (whether you like it or not) is packed with energy, and this makes for a kick ass live show. We are loud, rowdy, and more of the loud. Our guitarist once jumped off a stage onto a small flimsy table, during a solo, and almost killed himself… it was fucking awesome.

The thing is, a lot of bands have high energy. We needed to set ourselves apart, and create a truly fun, live show experience. So, the first thing we did was try to create some sort of logo. Luckily our drummer had a friend that fiddled with creative logo creations, and she drew some stuff up for us. One of the things she showed us was an extremely happy-looking ghost:

We immediately loved it. Next, I searched the internet for a perfect font to match the ghost, and after finding it, designed the complete logo:

As you can see, we chose the color lime/neon green. This was because, at the time, I had a green guitar and decided we should use the color as another piece of our brand. So, I went out and bought neon green duct tape and we covered our gear in it. Since then we have added a ton of green clothing to the show as well. This gives us a fun and flashy look that people don’t easily forget.

The next piece in our brand building came from one of our friends, who happens to also be our biggest fan. His name is Quinton and he is one of those people that has the unbelievable good fortune of never really growing up. His favorite thing in the world is to get his massive Lego collection together and make stop motion movies of space battles, drunk pirates, and coke-head ferrets fighting in Vietnam. Quinton came up with the spectacular idea of creating a costume of the ghost, then wear it around and dance with people at shows:

Quinton decided to name the ghost “Quazee the Ata Ghost” and if the name wasn’t enough, he gave it a voice as well. Quazee’s voice sounds like a turkey’s gobble… no one knows why, at this point we all just consider Quinton to be a mad genius, and we have stopped questioning why he does any of the things he does. Also, when Quinton comes out as Quazee he really owns it, he is in character from the time the suit goes on, until the end of the night, and this is a special treat for whoever is reading this, because we usually keep who is in the costume a secret.

The latest thing we did was for our Halloween show. We took branding to the next level and started creating a world around Quazee. I wrote a short history of him and how he became a ghost:

Story of Quazee

At some of our bigger shows, when Quazee is around, I read the story to the audience as an intro for one of our songs. During the Halloween show Quazee even did a puppet show, along with the story.

People who get to see our shows usually have a great time, and no one ever forgets Quazee. We are still building on our brand, but so far I like where we are headed, and I think we can keep building until there is a whole Ata Ghost universe for people to be a part of.
