Lebron James – By tomorrow this won’t be news to you.

I’m sure by this point everyone has seen the new Lebron James Nike commercial. But don’t roll your eyes and click your mouse, I’m not here to stick my nose in W+K’s ass (even though they constantly deserve the entire industry’s nostrils there) I’m here to point out how incredibly PR-within-advertising this video is. Just in case you haven’t seen it, welcome to the world, hope your rock was warm, and here it is:

Lebron James recently posted some not so great comments about race and basketball on Twitter. These comments lost him a great number of fans, so instead of slowly working his fan base back up, W+K took over as his Public Relations councilors, and they came up with something ingenious. This is PR at its best and it was thought up and put together by ADVERTISERS. Obviously this is happening a lot now, we are always hearing about the crossing of genres, if you will, between advertising and PR. Though, it is not everyday that we get to see such a beautiful success in both fields by one agency.

After this campaign Lebron James will no longer be famous in my eyes, he will be infamous. He has been the young,  funny, lovable basketball player for so long that an image change is what he needed anyway. Now he is accepting his place as a villain! No apologies, no father speech commercials, just James asking a condescending rhetorical question; “What Should I Do?” I LOVE IT!! And even though I am not a basketball fan, I now want this guys poster on my wall.
